Over the years I have watched a lot of North American sellers try to pick a product photography studio in China — and I have also seen plenty of them get burned by the wrong one. Not because the studio was a scam, but because nobody asked the right questions upfront.
So here is what actually matters when you are choosing a studio, written from the inside.
Why Sellers Look at China Studios in the First Place
- Cost — typically a fraction of North American studio rates, especially at volume.
- Speed — three to five working days is normal delivery, not a rush fee.
- Proximity to suppliers — if your goods are made in China, they can go straight to the studio instead of crossing the ocean twice.
- Familiarity with marketplaces — a good China studio knows Amazon, Shopify, eBay and TikTok Shop requirements by heart.

The 7 Things That Actually Matter
1. White background quality. Ask for unedited, straight-out-of-camera white background examples. Anyone can show a retouched hero shot; the raw file tells you whether they understand lighting. If Amazon matters to you, the background must be genuinely pure white — see the Amazon image requirements.
2. Turnaround time — in writing. Ask how many working days from the moment the product arrives, and whether that includes retouching. Be sceptical of anyone promising same-day work on a complex product.
3. Sample logistics. Who receives the shipment, who handles customs, whether the studio can work with your supplier directly, and what happens to the sample afterwards. If shipping samples is a headache for you, ask whether the studio can collect from the supplier inside China — many can.
4. Communication. Can they answer in business English? How fast do they reply? What is the time-zone overlap with your day? Most China studios work comfortably with North American hours, but confirm the overlap before you are mid-shoot.
5. Retouching included. This is where hidden costs live. Ask explicitly whether retouching, background cleanup, and file delivery are included or billed separately.
6. Video capability. Short vertical video is now a normal part of an e-commerce asset pack. If the studio cannot shoot video in the same session, you will pay for two setups — and I explained why shooting photos and videos together is the smarter move.
7. Transparent pricing. Look for published prices and no minimum order. Our own price list is public for exactly this reason — you should be able to plan a budget before you send an enquiry.
Red Flags to Watch For
- No real portfolio — or a portfolio that looks like stock photos, with no product context (bottles, boxes, garments, jewellery).
- Vague turnaround — “as soon as possible” means there is no process.
- Retouching billed later — the cheap quote grows after delivery.
- No sample plan — if they cannot explain how goods reach them, they have not done this at scale.
- Prices far below everyone else — somebody is cutting corners, usually in lighting, editing, or both.

- Is retouching and file delivery included?
