Hey, Let’s Talk About Photo Count

Hi, it’s me again — your product photographer based in China.

“How many product photos do I actually need?” is one of the questions I hear most. And honestly, it’s a great question, because the answer affects both your budget and how well your listing performs.

The short version: you need more than you think, but fewer than you fear. Let me walk you through a practical way to figure out the right number for your products.

There’s No Magic Number (But There Is a Baseline)

Every product is different, so I can’t just give you one number and call it a day. A simple phone case and a complex mechanical gadget need very different sets of photos.

That said, there is a solid baseline that works for most ecommerce products. Start here, then add based on your product:

  • 1 main image — clean white background, product centered. This is the one Amazon requires and shoppers see first.
  • 2–3 detail shots — close-ups of materials, stitching, buttons, texture, or anything a customer can’t see in the main image.
  • 1 lifestyle or scale shot — shows the product in use or next to something familiar so buyers understand its real size.
  • 1 optional infographic — a clean graphic that highlights features, dimensions, or what’s in the box.

That gives you roughly 5–7 photos as a starting point. If you’re selling on Amazon, check my guide on Amazon image requirements so nothing gets rejected.

When to Add More Photos

Some products simply need more images to feel trustworthy. Add extra photos when:

  • The product has multiple colors or variations — show each one.
  • It’s technically complex (electronics, tools, appliances) — buyers need to see ports, buttons, and parts.
  • The material is the selling point (leather, glass, fabric) — close-ups build a lot of trust.
  • There’s a size concern (clothing, bags, furniture) — add measurement and scale shots.
  • You want to answer common questions before they’re asked — fewer support tickets, fewer returns.

For complex products, 8–12 photos is completely normal and worth it.

Quality Beats Quantity, Every Time

Here’s the part I want you to remember: five strong photos beat fifteen weak ones. A blurry shot, a bad shadow, or an inconsistent background can quietly cost you sales — and no amount of extra photos fixes that.

If you’re not sure whether your current images are actually good, my guide on what makes a good product photo will help you judge them like a pro.

A well-shot set of photos doesn’t just look nice — it makes your product page feel complete and trustworthy, which is exactly what buyers need before they click “buy.”

A Simple Formula You Can Use

If you want a quick rule of thumb, try this:

  • Simple product (one color, familiar shape): 5–7 photos.
  • Mid-complexity product (a few features, multiple angles needed): 7–10 photos.
  • Complex product (electronics, wearables, gear): 10–15 photos including detail and lifestyle shots.

And if you’re wondering whether you should add short videos on top of all those photos, the short answer is yes — I explained why in my article about shooting photos and videos together.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need a hundred photos. You need the right photos — a clean main image, a few honest details, and a lifestyle or scale shot that helps buyers feel confident. Start with the baseline, add what your product needs, and invest in quality over quantity.

Not sure how many photos your specific product needs? Just ask — I’m happy to recommend a shot list that fits your product and your budget. No pressure, just practical advice.
