Toy Product Photography: A Practical Guide

Hi, it’s me again — your product photographer based in China.

Short answer: sell the toy and the play experience

A toy is not just a shaped object. Buyers need to understand size, age range, how it moves, what is included and what it feels like to play with it. A clean product-only image proves the design; it does not show why a child would want it.

A strong toy set usually includes a clean hero, a play-context image, a scale reference, feature details, the full set contents, packaging, variations and a short video. For most listings, 7–9 images plus video is a practical starting point.

The goal is to make the toy look exciting without making it look different from what actually arrives in the box.

Image jobWhat to showWhy toy buyers need it
1. HeroClean front view of the toy, fully assembledMakes the product instantly recognisable
2. Play contextA child or hands using the toyShows scale, age range and fun
3. ScaleHand, child or familiar object for sizeReduces “smaller than expected” returns
4. DetailFace, texture, joints, controls or lightsShows quality and play features
5. Set contentsEverything included in the boxAnswers what the buyer actually receives
6. PackagingBox, inserts and gift-ready presentationSupports retail and gifting purchases
7. VariationColours, sizes or accessory optionsHelps buyers choose without messaging

Toy photography has to sell both the object and the experience of playing with it.

A clean hero image makes the toy’s shape, colours and main features easy to understand.

The biggest challenges in toy photography

  • Bright colours can clip. Red, yellow and saturated plastic can lose detail under strong light.
  • Glossy plastic reflects everything. The room, lights and camera can show up on the surface.
  • Scale is hard to judge. A toy can look much larger or smaller online than it does in real life.
  • Small features matter. Faces, joints, buttons, lights and accessories are part of the value.
  • Sets have many pieces. Buyers need to see exactly what is included.
  • Play context can look fake. A child holding the toy awkwardly is worse than no child at all.
  • Safety and age information matter. Packaging and warning labels should be readable.

A scale reference and play context help buyers understand how the toy will be used.

Lighting bright toys without losing colour

Use soft, even light but keep enough contrast to show shape. A pure white background can work for the hero, but very bright toys may need a light grey or coloured background to stop the edges from disappearing.

  • Diffuse the light source and avoid direct flash on glossy plastic.
  • Check the brightest red, yellow and white areas for clipping.
  • Use black cards to define edges on light-coloured toys.
  • Use white cards to lift shadows on dark or detailed toys.
  • Keep the colour temperature consistent across the set.
  • Photograph reflective faces, screens and plastic packaging from an angle that avoids camera reflections.

If the toy has a glossy or reflective surface, see our background comparison and plan the set before the shoot.

How to show scale

  • Place the toy next to a hand, a child or a familiar object.
  • Show the toy being held the way a child would hold it.
  • Photograph the full set laid out with every accessory visible.
  • Include dimensions and recommended age in the listing copy.
  • Use a child model only when the age range and scene are believable.

Our baby and child model photography guide and hand model guide explain how to plan scale shots without making the scene look staged.

How to photograph a toy set or bundle

  • Lay out every piece before the shoot and count it against the packing list.
  • Show the complete set in one clear overhead or 45° image.
  • Use group and bundle photography to keep the arrangement readable.
  • Photograph important accessories individually when they affect play.
  • Show the box and inserts so the buyer knows what arrives.
  • Keep the same background and lighting across all bundle images.

For larger sets and bundles, our group and bundle photography guide covers arrangement and composition.

Do you need a child model?

A child model can be powerful for toys because it shows scale, age range and real play. It can also hurt the listing if the child looks uncomfortable, the toy is held incorrectly or the scene does not match the product.

Use a child model when the toy is designed for children and the play context is central to the sale. Use a hand or product-only scale shot when you need a simpler, faster or more controlled image.

Platform advice

  • Amazon: clean white hero first, then scale, feature, set-contents, play and packaging images.
  • Shopify: lead with a clear hero and use play or lifestyle images to build desire. See our Shopify photography guide.
  • Etsy: show craftsmanship, packaging and gift-ready details. Our Etsy photography guide covers the image order.
  • Social media: use short video, movement and genuine play rather than static catalogue shots.

How to edit toy photos without making them look fake

  • Keep the plastic texture and moulding detail.
  • Do not over-saturate colours until they no longer match the product.
  • Remove dust, fingerprints and temporary marks.
  • Keep faces, eyes and printed details sharp.
  • Do not composite a child into a scene unless the scale and lighting match perfectly.
  • Keep the background and colour treatment consistent across the range.

Before the shoot, use our product preparation checklist so every piece is clean, complete and ready.

Common mistakes

  • Shooting only the front of the toy and hiding the play features.
  • No scale reference.
  • Not showing everything included in the box.
  • Using a child model who looks uncomfortable or the wrong age.
  • Blowing out bright plastic or losing detail in dark parts.
  • Over-editing colours until the toy looks different from the real product.
  • Forgetting video when the toy moves, lights up or makes sound.

FAQ

How do you photograph toys for ecommerce?
Use a clean hero, a scale shot, feature details, the full set contents, packaging and a play-context image. Add video when the toy moves, lights up or makes sound.

What background is best for toy photography?
White and light grey work well for marketplace heroes and catalogue images. Coloured or lifestyle backgrounds can work better for play context, but the toy must remain the main focus.

Do toy listings need a child model?
Not always, but a child model can show scale, age range and real play. Use one when the play experience is central to the product and the age range is believable.

How many photos should a toy listing have?
Seven to nine images plus a short video is a strong target: hero, play, scale, two feature details, set contents, packaging and variation.

Can I photograph toys with a phone?
Yes for simple products with soft light, but a studio setup helps with reflective plastic, consistent colour, child models and multi-piece sets.

Final thoughts

Toy photography works when the buyer can understand the product and imagine the play. Show the toy clearly, prove the scale, show what is included and add movement or genuine play when it helps.

If you send me your toy category, age range and target platform, I can suggest the right image sequence. You can see how we plan projects on our product photography services page, check the price list, or browse more guides in the knowledge hub.
