Hey, Let’s Talk Black Products

Hi, it’s me again — your product photographer based in China.

Last time we talked about photographing white products. Today, let’s cover the opposite challenge: black products. They look sleek and premium in real life, but they’re just as tricky in front of a camera.

Black absorbs light, hides detail, and can turn into a flat black blob if you’re not careful. Here’s how to photograph them well.

The Problem With Black

Black products love to swallow light. Without enough of the right kind of light, you lose the shape, the texture, and the details that make buyers trust the product.

Lighting Tips

  • Use soft, directional light — it creates gentle highlights that outline the shape.
  • Add edge lighting — a subtle rim of light separates a black product from a dark or black background.
  • Watch the highlights — too many hot spots make the product look shiny in the wrong way.
  • Shoot in RAW — it gives you room to recover detail in editing.

The trick is letting the light trace the product’s edges so its shape reads clearly.

Background Choice

A black product on pure white can look striking and is often what marketplaces need. On a dark background, it can look very premium — but you need edge lighting to keep the shape visible.

This is part of the bigger white background vs. lifestyle choice, and it depends on your brand and platform.

A Clean Result Done Right

Here’s a quick example of clean, simple photography where the product really shows its shape:

Styling Tips

Black products pair beautifully with simple, neutral props — a bit of texture in the background helps them stand out. My props guide has practical ideas.

Editing Black Products

Editing is where black products get their final polish: recovering shadow detail, cleaning the background, and keeping the blacks rich without crushing them. It’s the same careful process I described in my article on product photo editing.

Final Thoughts

Black products don’t have to disappear into the frame. With soft directional light, careful edge lighting, and a little editing, they can look sharp, premium, and full of detail.

If black products have been giving you trouble, just reach out — I’m happy to talk through how we’d shoot yours. No pressure, just friendly advice.

Black and white products are the two hardest extremes to shoot — the white product guide covers the other side. And when you are ready to price a shoot, our price list lays it out clearly.
