Hey, Let’s Talk Money

Hi, it’s me again — your product photographer based in China.

Everybody loves a deal. And when you see product photography for $99 next to quotes for $500, it’s natural to wonder: is the cheap one worth it?

The honest answer? It depends on what you’re getting for that price. Let’s break down what different price points usually include, so you can choose with your eyes open.

Why Prices Vary So Much

Photography pricing isn’t random. It reflects things like:

  • The studio, lighting, and equipment being used.
  • The amount of editing and retouching included.
  • How many images and angles you get.
  • Turnaround time — faster usually costs more.
  • Whether lifestyle shots, props, or video are included.

I wrote a full breakdown of product photography pricing in China if you want the details. Here’s the short version.

The Budget Shoots (Around $99)

A budget shoot usually means clean, simple white-background images with basic editing. That’s genuinely useful for:

  • Testing a brand-new product idea.
  • Getting a large catalog photographed quickly.
  • Products where a simple hero shot is enough.

Here’s an example of the kind of fast, affordable turnaround a budget shoot can deliver:

The Mid-Range Shoots

In the mid-range, you start getting more: multiple angles, better retouching, a few detail shots, and maybe some basic props or styling. This is the sweet spot for most established sellers who need images that actually convert.

The Premium Shoots

Premium shoots include full creative direction: custom sets, lifestyle scenes, models if needed, video, and fast turnaround. These make sense for hero products, ad campaigns, and brand launches where the images are the main investment.

What Matters More Than Price

Here’s the thing I want you to remember: the cheapest option isn’t always the best deal, and the most expensive isn’t always worth it. What matters is whether the photos match your goals and requirements.

Before you book, check my guide on what makes a good product photo and my advice on choosing the right photographer so you know what to look for.

How to Choose Wisely

A simple rule: match the shoot to the product’s stage. Testing an idea? A budget shoot is fine. Launching a main listing or running ads? Invest more. The ROI numbers in my product photography ROI article show why that investment usually pays back.

And whatever you choose, planning ahead helps — here’s why you should book before your inventory ships.

Final Thoughts

Cheap product photography isn’t automatically bad, and expensive isn’t automatically better. The key is knowing what each price point includes and matching it to your goals. Ask questions, check references, and choose the option that fits where your products are right now.

If you’re not sure which level of shoot makes sense for your budget, just ask. I’m happy to talk through your options honestly — no pressure, no upsell.
